If you extract cannabidiol (CBD) oil from hemp, then the hemp oil should also contain CBD. Well, it is not exactly like that. People often confuse the two, but there is a difference in the way they are processed.
The cannabis plant contains about 113 active cannabinoids. CBD is just one of them. The best CBD oil products are organic and extracted from hemp. They contain no tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is responsible for the psychoactive properties in marijuana.
So, although both hemp and marijuana belong to the cannabis variety of plants, they are not the same. Even government regulators fall into this trap. It was not until last year when the federal government moved to lift the ban on industrial and commercial hemp with the approval of the 2018 Farm Bill.
However, conflicting guidelines from the federal government resulted in confusion in the implementation at the state level. In Miami, Florida, for instance, you need a prescription for hemp-derived products. You may have the best CBD oil tinctures or creams with you, and they contain 0.3% THC as the law requires, but they may get you in trouble.
With that said, Florida is working on this problem. On June 25, 2019, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the Florida Senate Bill 1020, which will align local laws with the Farm Bill.
CBD Oil vs. Hemp Bill
There are numerous anecdotal evidence and clinical trials that point to the benefits of CBD oil. CBD products have been known to provide instantaneous relief for pain and inflammation.
While people may think of CBD for oil and tinctures, there are many variations under the same umbrella. For instance, you can find gels, creams, roll-ons, and patches infused with CBD. The cannabidiol gets extracted from the flowers, stalks, and leaves of the cannabis plant.
Various studies on rats and even some on human subjects confirmed the anecdotal claims about its anti-inflammatory benefits. It is not a recent discovery. As early as 5,000 years ago, people were already experimenting with cannabis as a pain treatment. However, the first documented evidence can be traced back 400 years ago.
Cannabidiol has been used to treat:
- Arthritis
- Osteoarthritis
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Seizures
- Parkinson’s
- Joint pain
- Headaches
- Inflammation
- Eczema
- Psoriasis
- Muscle aches
There is also some evidence that CBD was used to treat acne. The science works by reducing the lipid production in the sebaceous glands, which produce all the sebum on your face.
Meanwhile, hemp oil contains no CBD at all, like, zero percent. However, it still refers to cannabis sativa oil. Hemp oil has more of the similar properties that you will find in jojoba oil or sunflower seed oil. The process involves cold-pressing the extract from the seeds.
However, hemp oil is an excellent source of Omega-3, antioxidants, and Omega-6 fatty acids. You find many skincare products containing hemp oil as one of the primary ingredients. It is an excellent softener and moisturizer that will keep your skin looking young. Hemp oil can also be used to mix with your food for added nutrition.
As you can see, there is a bit of difference between CBD oil and hemp oil. It is best to know this distinction, especially if you are looking for CBD products for pain management.
