The disappearance of Madeleine McCann has returned to public attention following renewed discussion surrounding the recently released Epstein files. Madeleine was a three-year-old British girl who vanished during a family holiday in Portugal in May 2007, in a case that remains one of the most widely known missing-person investigations in modern history.
I first read about Madeleine shortly after her disappearance in 2007. Years later, around 2020, I became interested in examining her birth chart after discovering that her birth time had also become publicly available.
Madeleine’s chart is, in many ways, a mystery. In this article, I will examine both her natal chart and the transits active on the day she disappeared. I use the present tense throughout because what happened to Madeleine remains unknown.
Note: Astrology can highlight significant themes, questions, and patterns, it cannot provide definitive answers in a case that remains unresolved.
Natal Chart

Madeleine was born on May 12, 2003, at 6:15 PM in Leicester, England. She has a Libra Ascendant, a Libra Moon, and a Taurus Sun. Venus therefore becomes one of the most important planets in her chart, ruling both the Ascendant and the Sun.
Venus is placed in Aries on the Descendant, forming an exact opposition to the Ascendant. From an astrological perspective, this placement immediately draws attention to other people and to interactions that come from outside the self. Aries adds urgency, impulsiveness, direct action, and sometimes conflict, suggesting that important life events may involve the actions or decisions of others.
The Taurus Sun sits in the 7th house without major aspects. Unaspected planets often stand out because they are not moderated by other planetary influences. During major transits, they can become extremely sensitive and act as key triggers within the chart. Since the Sun is also associated with authority figures, fathers, and personal identity, its placement deserves careful attention.
A Strong Connection Between Family and Other People
Madeleine’s Moon is in Libra in the 11th house. This placement immediately caught my attention because the Moon rules her 4th house of family, home, parents, and private life.
In other words, the ruler of the family house is placed in a house connected with groups, other people, social circles, and the wider public. This creates a direct astrological link between family matters and people outside the immediate household.
The symbolism becomes even stronger because her 4th house begins in Aquarius, a sign naturally associated with the 11th house. From the start, the chart repeatedly connects family themes with the involvement of other people.
Mercury is retrograde in Taurus and conjunct Lilith in the 7th house. This is one of the more unusual signatures in the chart. Mercury governs information, communication, movement, and perception, while Lilith often points to subjects that are difficult to explain, understand, or fully uncover. In Taurus and the 7th house, this conjunction raises questions about circumstances involving other people, shared environments, and situations that appear straightforward on the surface but contain additional layers beneath.
One configuration stood out to me immediately when I first examined the chart several years ago: the exact square between Mercury and the Mars-Neptune conjunction in Aquarius.
The Mars-Neptune Signature
Mars and Neptune together create one of the most difficult combinations to interpret with certainty. Mars wants action and clarity, while Neptune obscures, dissolves, and blurs boundaries. In chart analysis, this conjunction is frequently associated with confusion, missing information, secrecy, misunderstandings, or situations that become difficult to reconstruct later.
The square to Mercury intensifies that theme. Information becomes unreliable, details become unclear, and simple explanations become harder to find.
The Mars-Neptune conjunction is located in the 4th house, connecting this symbolism directly to family, home, roots, and the private sphere of life. On its own, this placement does not indicate any specific event. Combined with Mercury retrograde and Lilith in the 7th house, however, it contributes to a chart pattern that repeatedly returns to themes of uncertainty, missing information, family matters, and the involvement of other people.
This configuration also forms part of a T-square with Jupiter in Leo in the 10th house. Jupiter expands whatever it touches, while the 10th house relates to visibility, reputation, and public attention. Taken together, these placements describe a situation that extends far beyond the private sphere and becomes known on a much larger scale.
Looking at the chart today, it is difficult not to notice how strongly this pattern resonates with a case that continues to attract worldwide attention decades later.
Transits on the Day of the Disappearance

Madeleine disappeared on the evening of May 3, 2007, in Praia da Luz, Portugal, less than two weeks before her fourth birthday. When I examine the transit chart for that day, the first thing that stands out is exactly what caught my attention in her natal chart years ago: the importance of her unaspected Sun.
Transiting Neptune formed an exact square to her Sun while moving through the 4th house. Neptune is strongly associated with confusion, uncertainty, missing information, and situations that are difficult to define clearly. When it forms a hard aspect to the Sun, questions surrounding identity, location, and visibility often come into focus. In a case such as this, the symbolism is difficult to ignore.
At the same time, transiting Lilith formed an exact quincunx to the Sun from the 12th house, another placement connected with hidden matters, isolation, secrets, and circumstances that remain outside ordinary perception. Together, these transits place considerable pressure on an already sensitive natal Sun.
The fact that Madeleine was born with an unaspected Sun makes this transit even more significant. Unaspected planets often respond very strongly when activated by major transits, and because her Sun is in Taurus, a Venus-ruled sign, the event also draws attention back to Venus, one of the key planets in her natal chart.
A Mercury return was also taking place. Transiting Mercury was conjunct her natal Mercury in the 7th house, emphasizing themes connected with other people, communication, movement, and encounters. At the same time, the transiting Sun formed a square to her natal Mars-Neptune conjunction while also activating her Mercury. This creates a striking pattern involving communication, movement, confusion, and the actions of others.
Another notable factor is Saturn moving through her 10th house. Saturn often brings restrictions, barriers, delays, or circumstances beyond one’s control. At the same time, Jupiter and Pluto were activating financial and power-related themes within the chart, adding another layer of complexity to an already unusual transit picture.
What stands out most, however, is the repetition of Neptune. Transiting Neptune forms an exact square to her Sun, while the transiting Sun simultaneously activates her natal Neptune through another square. In my experience, double-whammy transits deserve special attention because the same story is being told from multiple directions at once, especially when luminaries are involved.
If I knew nothing about Madeleine McCann or what happened on that evening, I would still view this as a chart connected with disappearance, confusion surrounding the facts, and a situation that becomes increasingly difficult to reconstruct as time passes. More than seventeen years later, investigators, journalists, and the public continue searching for answers, yet the central mystery remains unresolved.
How I Interpret It
As an astrologer, I can only interpret the symbolism shown in the chart. I do not know Madeleine, her family, or anyone connected to the case, and astrology cannot establish facts.
What stands out to me is the repeated emphasis on the 4th house, family symbolism, and other people. These themes are present in the natal chart and become activated again through the transits surrounding her disappearance. For that reason, I find it difficult to view this chart as describing an event involving only a single individual acting in isolation. The symbolism points toward a broader set of circumstances involving multiple people and connections that extend beyond the immediate event itself.
Another recurring theme involves power, influence, status, and resources. This does not automatically mean money was the primary motive, but I do see strong indications that the case involves people with access, influence, protection, or connections that place them in a different position than the average person.
The Moon’s placement in the 2nd house on the evening of the disappearance is also difficult for me to ignore. In astrological terms, the 2nd house deals with value, possessions, ownership, and exchange. Whether that symbolism refers to money, influence, leverage, or something else entirely is impossible to determine, but it forms part of a larger pattern that repeats throughout the chart.
If additional information about Madeleine’s disappearance is ever revealed, I would pay close attention to the years 2030 and 2031, when transiting Pluto reaches her natal Mars-Neptune conjunction. Pluto is associated with exposure, revelation, hidden matters, and the emergence of information that has remained buried for long periods of time.
Does the chart show disappearance? Yes, heavily. Does it show family involvement? Possibly
