Why You Sleep With Your Hands Above Your Head: Spiritual Meaning

You go to sleep in one position and wake up with both arms stretched above your head, sometimes with your hands resting on the pillow or even reaching toward the headboard. If this happens repeatedly, the position has an interesting spiritual interpretation.

Sleeping with your hands above your head is spiritually associated with receiving, surrender, openness, and releasing something you have been holding onto. Raised hands have symbolic meaning in prayer, worship, healing, manifestation, and surrender, so unconsciously adopting the same posture during sleep can be especially interesting during emotionally or spiritually important changes in your life.

Raised Hands Symbolize Receiving

Think about what your hands do throughout the day. You reach for things, hold onto them, push them away, give, take, protect, and touch. Raised above your head, those same hands are empty and open.

Sleeping this way may carry similar symbolism during a difficult chapter in your life. Perhaps you have spent weeks trying to control the outcome of a relationship, job, financial situation, family problem, or decision. Eventually, you reach the point where you have done everything you can.

Your arms above your head can represent that release: I cannot control everything, so I am finally letting this go.

Your Crown Chakra

The position also has an interesting connection with the crown chakra, located at the top of the head. The crown chakra is associated with higher consciousness, spiritual understanding, divine connection, and receiving guidance beyond ordinary thought.

With your arms raised, your hands rest around or beyond the area of the crown. Symbolically, this creates an upward-reaching posture similar to gestures used during prayer and meditation.

Your chest may also become more exposed in this position. That brings the heart chakra into the interpretation, particularly if you are becoming more emotionally available after heartbreak or allowing yourself to love and trust again.
