The Sun-Moon midpoint is the exact halfway point between your natal Sun and Moon. In a birth chart, it describes where your identity, wants, and direction in life meet your emotional needs and instincts. If your Sun and Moon pull you in different directions, this midpoint can be especially interesting because it combines both into a single degree in the chart.
For example, someone with a Gemini Sun and Aquarius Moon has their Sun-Moon midpoint in Aries. Gemini and Aquarius are both air signs, so there is already a strong emphasis on ideas, communication, curiosity, independence, and mental stimulation. Aries adds a more direct and action-oriented quality to the midpoint. Experiences that activate this degree can bring out the person’s need to act on their ideas, make their own decisions, take initiative, or pursue something they personally want.
A natal planet on this midpoint adds its own themes. Venus can make love, attraction, relationships, pleasure, or money closely connected with this part of the chart, while Saturn can bring responsibility, commitment, delays, boundaries, or long-term decisions.
How to Find Your Sun-Moon Midpoint
You can calculate your Sun-Moon midpoint for free on Astro-Seek. Go to its Midpoint Calculator, enter your birth date, exact birth time, and birthplace, and the calculator will generate your planetary midpoints.
Look for Sun/Moon in the results. You will see the zodiac sign and exact degree of your midpoint.
For example, your Sun-Moon midpoint could fall at 18° Scorpio. Once you know the degree, check whether you have natal planets, angles, or other important points close to 18° Scorpio or 18° Taurus.
The conjunction and opposition are especially important with midpoints. I prefer using a fairly tight orb, usually around 1–2 degrees, because midpoint contacts become much more specific when they are close.

What Your Sun-Moon Midpoint Says About You
Your Sun-Moon midpoint combines what you consciously want with what you need emotionally. The sign it falls in describes how these two sides of you can find common ground. Someone with a Gemini Sun, Aquarius Moon, and Sun-Moon midpoint in Aries, for example, may be highly mental and independent, but the Aries midpoint adds a need to act, initiate, compete, or follow their own impulses rather than staying in the world of ideas.
Natal planets conjunct or opposite the midpoint can become a big part of how this plays out. Venus on the Sun-Moon midpoint can make relationships, attraction, pleasure, money, or creativity closely connected with personal fulfillment. Relationships may have an especially strong influence on the direction the person takes in life.
Saturn can connect the midpoint with commitment, responsibility, work, age differences, authority, or experiences that require patience. A person with Saturn here may take relationships and major personal decisions seriously, or feel that emotional fulfillment comes with responsibilities attached.
Jupiter can connect the midpoint with travel, foreign countries, education, opportunity, growth, or taking bigger chances. Pluto can bring intensity, power dynamics, major endings and beginnings, or relationships that change the person’s direction in a lasting way.
Transits to the Sun-Moon Midpoint
Transiting planets can activate your Sun-Moon midpoint too. These periods can coincide with developments involving relationships, personal direction, emotional needs, family, identity, or decisions that require you to consider both what you want and how you feel.
A Jupiter transit may coincide with expansion, opportunities, travel, or a happier personal chapter. Saturn may bring commitment, increased responsibility, or an important decision. Uranus can bring sudden changes and a stronger desire for freedom, while Pluto may coincide with an intense period of personal transformation.
The Missing Piece in Your Chart
Your Sun-Moon midpoint may look like one small mathematical point in the chart, but it connects your identity, direction, and personal desires with your emotional needs and instincts. Its sign can add another piece to how you understand yourself, while planets conjunct or opposite it can explain why certain relationships, decisions, or periods of your life feel especially significant.
And if you ever feel stuck when reading your chart, or current transits alone seem unable to fully explain what you are experiencing, check your midpoints. A transit to your Sun-Moon midpoint, or another person’s planet landing directly on it in synastry, may add the missing piece you were looking for.
Of course, there are many other midpoints to explore, but in my opinion, the Sun-Moon midpoint is the first one worth checking. With both luminaries involved, it gives you a great starting point before you move on to other planetary midpoints in your chart.
