The 741 Gamestop theory has been a hot topic of discussion among the Gamestop investor community on social media platforms like Twitter and Reddit. But what is it all about?
What Is The 741 Gamestop Theory
The theory is based on tweets by Ryan Cohen, the founder of Chewy, who joined the Gamestop board in 2021 and later on became its chairman, and other circumstances surrounding the Gamestop “situation.”
Note that I put the word “situation” in quotes because I am one of those who have been interested in GameStop since its mini short squeeze back in January 2021, and I have a number of friends who have invested in GameStop and direct registered their shares(1).
Although I am not an investor myself, the whole situation fascinated me, and I believe that something significant is about to happen because the whole thing still seems as relevant as it was two years ago. And not only that. It’s glaringly obvious that something is still not closed, or there’s still something that’s bothering those on the other end of the trade.
It is common for people to speak negatively about individuals they dislike or have no control over, in an attempt to alter others’ opinions of them. This trend continues to occur on television, major news websites, and social media platforms, even after two years since the short squeeze. Someone is not happy with something for some reason, and the media is still trying to dissuade people from buying GME stock.
The 741 Pattern
People noticed that Ryan Cohen repeatedly tweeted at 7:41 (2). If it was a one-off, it probably wouldn’t have generated as much interest. But he tweeted several times at this specific time. Once GameStop investors noticed this pattern, they began to believe that it was not a coincidence (or “cohedience” in Reddit terms.)
Following that, Ryan Cohen posted on Twitter 7, 4, and 1 times during three consecutive months. And something more. GameStop’s YouTube channel had 741 videos at that time.
Some of the investors and Reddit users further mention that back in 2008, Volkswagen’s short squeeze started when Porsche increased its holdings in VW to 74.1%.
Now, it’s really hard to see if Cohen’s tweets were posted at 7:41 on purpose and whether the number has any meaning at all. Personally, I don’t believe he thought about what time he was going to drop the next tweet. We’ll probably never know the truth, but it’s still a mystery.
