Ever wondered about your gender identity? There may be some hints in your birth chart! Now, your chart can’t say for sure if you’re transgender. Figuring out your gender is personal. But it can show things that make feeling non-binary more common.
If how you were labeled at birth doesn’t feel quite right, take a look at your chart. It may give you an idea why that is. Please note that the chart can’t determine who you are. There’s no one thing that says “you’re trans” or not. Also, this article is talking about Western astrology, not other systems like Vedic astrology.
General Indicators
There are a few things that can give you hints about possibly being transgender. I say “hints” because they’re more like “hints,” if anything. But they could be signs to pay attention to:
Sun Sign
If your Sun sign is in a mutable sign like Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, or Pisces, you may have a more fluid sense of self. These signs are adaptable and open-minded, less attached to rigid identities. Planets in the 12th house, the house of the unconscious and spirituality, can also suggest a propensity to transcend limiting definitions of gender.
Moon Sign
The Moon represents your emotional nature and private self. If your Moon is in a masculine sign like Aries or Sagittarius, you may feel more comfortable expressing yourself in traditionally male ways, regardless of your assigned sex. A Moon in Aquarius, in particular, can indicate a rebellious streak against socially prescribed gender roles.
Mars Sign
Mars symbolizes sexuality, aggression, and action. Its sign position and aspects can reveal how you assert yourself in intimate relationships. If Mars is in a feminine sign like Cancer or Pisces, you may be more comfortable adopting traditionally female sexual behaviors and turn-ons. Mars, in aspect to Uranus, the planet of individuality and rebellion, can signify a desire to transcend traditional sexual roles altogether.
The Ascendant
Your Ascendant (or Rising Sign) depicts how you project yourself to the world and the “mask” you wear in public. If your Ascendant is in a sign like Gemini (androgynous) or Aquarius (androgynous), you may feel comfortable presenting in a more gender-fluid or androgynous way. The ruler of your Ascendant and the aspects it makes are also important to consider.
Personal Planet Aspects
Aspects (connections) between personal planets, especially the Moon, Venus, and Mars, can reveal inner tensions related to your gender expression or a desire to integrate qualities of the opposite gender.
For example, a square between Venus (feminine principle) and Mars (masculine principle) could indicate difficulties reconciling these energies within yourself.
Taking a closer look at your birth chart can offer some meaningful perspectives on your gender identity. Looking at where the planets and signs are positioned at your time of birth can provide genuine insights into who you are at your heart.
Things like how you see your gender, and yourself are mirrored in the chart. Astrology recognizes that we’re all multifaceted beings with numerous sides to our nature. But if you pay attention to the messages in your chart, you pave the way to fully embracing all parts of who you are.
Major Transgender Indicators In A Natal Chart
If you’re transgender or questioning your gender identity, your natal chart can provide insight into your true self. Look for these indicators:
Planetary Placements
Where the Sun, Moon, and inner planets are placed in your chart offer clues. For example, a Sun in a feminine sign like Cancer or a Moon in Aries, an androgynous sign, could indicate a female or non-binary identity in a male body.
Aspects of The Sun Or Moon
Challenging aspects, like squares or oppositions, between the sun/moon and outer planets often reveal inner turmoil over identity or difficulty expressing your true self. For example, a square between the Sun and Uranus can signify a struggle to express an unconventional identity freely.
12th House Placements
Planets in the 12th house, the house of the unconscious and self-undoing, frequently point to a hidden or unexpressed identity. For example, a 12th house Sun or Venus could indicate a female identity in a male body that feels impossible to express openly.
You may feel like you can’t show what’s really going on inside. You are keeping your true feelings bottled up and pretending you’re okay on the outside when, on the inside, you’re just simmering.
As a kid, you may also spend so much time wondering why you felt like a woman when you were born a man, or vice versa. You will ask yourself all these deep questions, digging to figure it out.
Chiron Aspects
Chiron, the wounded healer, represents core wounds and life struggles. Chiron aspects to personal planets, especially the Sun or Moon, often reflect a deep struggle with identity and difficulty accepting oneself. For example, a square between Chiron and the Moon could indicate emotional pain over being unable to live as one’s identified gender.
Aspects That Suggest Gender Variance
Certain aspects in your natal chart can indicate a tendency towards gender variance or nonconformity. Some key aspects that suggest gender variance include:
Moon-Mars Aspects
The Moon represents your emotional identity and expression, while Mars governs your passions and drives. When these two planets form a challenging aspect like a square or opposition, it can create inner tension between your feelings and desires. This dissonance may lead to difficulties identifying with traditional gender roles and expression. Individuals with Moon-Mars disharmony often report feeling different from an early age.
Uranus-Personal Planet Aspects
Uranus is the planet of rebellion, individuality, and breaking free from convention. When Uranus forms a hard aspect with personal planets like the Sun, Moon, Mercury, or Venus, it suggests a tendency to rebel against societal norms and expectations, including traditional gender roles. There is a need to express your authentic self without limitations or labels. Uranus awakens your inner nonconformist.
Neptune-Personal Planet Aspects
Neptune dissolves boundaries and rules ideals of transcending limitations. Hard Neptune aspects to personal planets can indicate a desire to move beyond the physical form or material world. There may be a tendency to feel disconnected from your physical body or assigned gender. Strong Neptune aspects awaken a yearning for transcendence and a spiritual identity not defined by physical attributes.
Pluto-Personal Planet Aspects
Pluto is the planet of transformation, regeneration, and empowerment. Challenging Pluto aspects to personal planets signifies a need to gain power over your identity and how you present yourself to the world. There can be a compulsion to shed your old self-image and be reborn into a new, authentic identity that more accurately reflects your inner truth. Pluto helps you reclaim your power and live authentically.
Interpreting Transgender Indicators Holistically
Interpreting indicators in your astrology chart related to gender identity requires looking at the bigger picture. Don’t read too much into a single placement or aspect. Instead, look for themes across the chart that point to a more fluid sense of gender or transgender identity.
Planetary Placements
Look for an emphasis on planets associated with femininity (Moon, Venus) in masculine signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo) or vice versa. For example, having Venus in Aries or the Moon in Sagittarius can indicate a more androgynous expression of gender.
Aspects
See if planets associated with masculinity (Sun, Mars) and femininity (Moon, Venus) are in a harmonious aspect (trine, sextile) to each other. This can point to a natural blending of feminine and masculine qualities within the individual. Challenging aspects (square, opposition) between these planets may also indicate inner tension around gender identity.
Houses
Pay attention to the 5th and 11th houses, associated with self-expression and community. Planets here, especially the Sun or Moon, can reveal clues about a person’s gender identity and orientation. The 8th house also relates to sexuality and what we keep hidden, so placements here are important to consider.
Rising Sign
A person’s rising sign and its ruler give insight into how they move through the world and want to be perceived by others. If the rising sign or its ruler points to a different gender expression than the sex assigned at birth, this may indicate the individual identifies as transgender or gender nonconforming in some way.
Final Words
Astrology can provide some insight into gender identity, but it’s definitely not definitive. There are many factors that shape who we are. If the astrology descriptions really resonate with you though, it may be worth thinking about your gender identity some more.
All the astrology aspects mentioned are based on my 15 years of experience working with people. Ultimately, you deserve to feel completely comfortable and empowered as who you are. Don’t let anyone else’s opinions or restrictions stop you from discovering and embracing your authentic self.
