swedish swear words

Learning Swedish from an app or textbook will teach you tack, hej, and hur mår du? Spend enough time around Swedish speakers, however, and sooner or later you will hear fan, jävlar, helvete, skit, and a few words your language course conveniently skipped.

Swedish swear words often involve the devil, hell, sex, or bodily functions, while Swedish insults range from relatively mild words such as pucko to expressions you should be very careful about using. Some also sound much harsher in English translation than they do in everyday Swedish.

Here are 25 Swedish swear words and insults, what they actually mean, and how strong or offensive they are.

1. Fan

Meaning: damn, fuck

Fan is one of the Swedish swear words you are most likely to hear in everyday conversation. The word originally refers to the devil, but people use it for annoyance, surprise, disappointment, and emphasis.

Missed the bus? Fan. Dropped your phone? Fan! Forgot your keys upstairs? Also fan.

Va fan? means something along the lines of “what the hell?” or “what the fuck?” depending on the speaker and situation.

2. Jävlar

Meaning: devils; roughly damn/fuck as an exclamation

Jävlar literally means “devils,” but translating it literally misses how Swedes actually use it. As an exclamation, it can express shock, anger, pain, or even amazement.

Step barefoot on something sharp and jävlar! would fit perfectly.

You will also see the related adjective jävla, which works as an intensifier:

Den här jävla bilen. “This fucking car.”

3. Helvete

Meaning: hell

Helvete literally means “hell” and works well as an angry exclamation.

Something breaks at the worst possible moment and you might hear someone shout helvete! You can also encounter expressions such as dra åt helvete, literally “go to hell.”

It has considerably more force than a harmless oj (“oops”).

4. Satan

Meaning: Satan, the devil

Yes, Swedish speakers sometimes shout the actual name of Satan when something goes wrong.

Satan! can express anger, shock, pain, or disbelief. The religious meaning remains obvious, although in everyday swearing the speaker usually has something more immediate on their mind than theology.

5. Skit

Meaning: shit

This one is wonderfully easy for English speakers to remember. Skit literally means shit and can refer to feces, rubbish, something terrible, or something you strongly dislike. It also forms plenty of compounds and expressions.

Jävla skit! is the sort of thing you might hear after something breaks, fails, or refuses to cooperate.

Interestingly, skit- can also intensify ordinary adjectives in informal Swedish, so its use extends well beyond simply shouting “shit.”

6. Fy Fan

Meaning: for fuck’s sake, fucking hell, that’s awful/disgusting

Plain fy expresses disgust or disapproval, somewhat like “ugh” or “ew.”

Add fan and you get fy fan, a much stronger and extremely useful Swedish reaction. The exact English translation changes with context. Something can be disgusting, painful, shocking, terrible, or simply unbelievably bad and still earn a fy fan.

7. Din Jävel

Meaning: you bastard, you asshole

Here the swearing becomes personal.

Din jävel is directed at another person and can range from joking between friends to genuinely aggressive depending on tone.

The literal connection is again to “devil,” but “you bastard” is much closer to how the insult functions in English.

8. Dumma Fan

Meaning: fucking idiot, dumbass

Calling someone dumma fan is considerably less friendly than muttering fan because you missed the train.

Dum means stupid or dumb, and adding fan gives the insult considerably more bite.

9. Idiot

Meaning: idiot

Swedish occasionally makes things very easy for English speakers.

Idiot means exactly what you expect. It is a direct insult for someone behaving stupidly, carelessly, or incompetently.

10. Pucko

Meaning: idiot, moron, dummy

Pucko is a common insult for someone you consider stupid or foolish. It generally has less venom than some of the vulgar terms farther down this list.

Calling your friend a pucko after they do something ridiculous can sound teasing. Shouting it angrily at a stranger has a very different effect.

11. Skitstövel

Meaning: asshole, jerk

Literally, skitstövel combines skit (“shit”) with stövel (“boot”).

The literal “shit boot” is much more entertaining than the practical translation. In actual use, “asshole” or “jerk” gets the idea across better.

12. Rövhål

Meaning: asshole

Röv means ass and hål means hole, so this one translates almost perfectly.

Calling somebody a rövhål is direct, vulgar, and clearly insulting. There is very little room for misunderstanding.

13. Skithög

Meaning: piece of shit

Literally a “pile of shit,” skithög is used for a person you consider horrible, contemptible, or worthless.

This goes well beyond calling someone silly. If somebody calls you a skithög, they probably have a genuine problem with you.

14. Äckel

Meaning: disgusting person, creep

Äckel comes from language associated with disgust and can be aimed at someone considered revolting or creepy.

Depending on context, “creep” can be a particularly natural English equivalent.

15. Kärring

Meaning: old hag, old woman

Kärring can be derogatory when used about a woman, especially from someone who clearly intends it as an insult. Context and regional usage affect how harsh it sounds.

If your Swedish vocabulary is still developing, this is a word worth recognizing without experimenting with it on strangers.

16. Knäppskalle

Meaning: nutcase, idiot

Knäppskalle is a colorful insult for someone acting foolish, strange, or crazy.

It can sound almost playful in the right company, although tone determines whether you are teasing someone or genuinely insulting them.

17. Fetknopp

Meaning: fatty, fathead

Fetknopp is an insulting term connected to someone’s weight or appearance and can also be used more generally for a foolish person.

Either way, there are considerably better ways to make friends in Sweden.

18. Hora

Meaning: whore

Hora is a strongly derogatory sexual insult aimed primarily at women. It is much more offensive than everyday exclamations such as fan or jävlar.

Recognize it. Using it against someone is another matter entirely.

19. Slampa

Meaning: slut

Slampa is another derogatory term aimed at a woman’s perceived sexual behavior.

Its English equivalent is roughly “slut,” and it carries the same sort of insulting sexual judgment.

20. Slyna

Meaning: bitch, slut

Slyna is another strongly insulting term for a woman. Depending on context, English translations such as “bitch” or “slut” can capture the intended hostility.

21. Horunge

Meaning: son of a whore

Horunge combines hora with unge, meaning child or youngster.

It is a harsh personal insult involving someone’s mother or parentage and carries much more aggression than the casual swear words near the beginning of this list.

22. Fitta

Meaning: cunt

Fitta is a vulgar term for female genitalia and can also function as an insult or exclamation.

The closest English equivalent is “cunt,” so this belongs firmly among the stronger Swedish swear words.

23. Sug Kuk

Meaning: suck dick

Sug kuk is exactly as vulgar as its English translation suggests.

Sug means “suck” and kuk is a vulgar word for penis. Directed at another person, it is an aggressive sexual insult.

24. Kuksugare

Meaning: cocksucker

Another one requiring very little interpretation.

Kuksugare literally means “cock sucker” and functions as a vulgar insult. You are far more likely to need to recognize this word than to need it in your active Swedish vocabulary.

25. Håll Käften

Meaning: shut up, shut the fuck up

Håll käften tells someone to shut their mouth. Käft is a rough word for mouth or jaws, so the expression is considerably ruder than politely asking someone to stop talking.

Tone can take it from irritated to openly hostile.

Which Swedish Swear Words Are Most Common?

If you only want to recognize the most common Swedish swear words, start with fan, jävlar, helvete, skit, and fy fan. These are the ones you are much more likely to encounter as general expressions of anger, pain, surprise, or annoyance.

Words such as hora, fitta, horunge, and kuksugare are much more personal and offensive. There is a big difference between shouting fan! after dropping something and directing a sexual insult at another person.

And now, if a Swedish friend mutters jävla skit after their computer crashes, you will know exactly why the language app never taught you that lesson.
