Here’s What Happens If You Throw Salt Over Right Shoulder

These days, salt is cheap and easy to get. But it wasn’t always that way. In the past, people thought salt was a powerful thing. They believed that throwing a pinch of salt over your right shoulder would bring you good luck. But where does this idea come from?

The Origins of Throwing Salt Over Your Shoulder

The practice of throwing salt over your right shoulder is an interesting cultural tradition that has its roots in ancient superstitions and beliefs.

Salt has always been a precious commodity, valued for its ability to preserve food and enhance flavor. In many cultures, spilling salt was considered a major no-no – it was like throwing away money! Accidentally knocking over those valuable salt crystals was seen as an omen of bad luck or a harbinger of misfortune – a total bummer!

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. The act of tossing salt over the right shoulder is specifically tied to the belief that the devil or evil spirits lurk behind your left shoulder. When you throw salt over your right shoulder, it’s believed to protect you from harm and misfortune by blinding or warding off malevolent forces.

This superstition also has connections to religious traditions. In Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting “The Last Supper,” Judas Iscariot is depicted as having spilled salt, linking the act to betrayal and ill fortune. Some believe the practice of throwing salt originated from this biblical association.

The right shoulder holds significance in various belief systems too. In Christian tradition, the right side is often associated with righteousness and good, while the left is linked to evil or the profane. This symbolism reinforces the idea of using the right hand to cast salt over the right shoulder as a protective gesture.

Spiritual Meaning

The symbolism behind throwing salt over your right shoulder is quite interesting. It’s said that the devil himself is always hanging out over your left shoulder, just waiting to cause some mischief. So by tossing the salt over your right side, you’re essentially “blinding” old Lucifer with the grains of salt.

But that’s not the only version of this ritual out there. In some cultures, people actually throw the salt over their left shoulders instead. And in others, like Japan, sumo wrestlers will toss salt into the ring before a match as a way to purify the space and clear out any negative energy.

It just goes to show how universal the idea of salt being this purifying, protective substance really is. All around the world, people have found ways to incorporate salt into rituals and traditions aimed at keeping bad vibes at bay. Whether you’re tossing it over a shoulder or scattering it in a sacred space, salt has long been seen as a powerful force against evil and misfortune.

Does Throwing Salt Really Bring Good Luck?

The belief was that if you quickly threw a pinch of salt over your right shoulder, it would land in the eyes of any restless spirits lurking behind you, blinding them from your misfortune. It was like a little seasoning shield to protect you from those pesky bad luck demons hovering around.

So the whole idea of throwing salt over your right shoulder to bring good luck and drive away evil stems from this notion that evil spirits are always lurking right behind you, just waiting to cause you trouble. But by tossing that salt over your shoulder, you’re effectively blinding or confusing those spirits, preventing them from being able to see you and bring you any harm or bad vibes.

It’s a quirky old superstition for sure, but one that’s managed to stick around even today when people spill the salt shaker. Just a little seasoning tossed behind you, and suddenly all those bad omens are kept at bay. It might seem silly, but lots of people still do it just to be on the safe side – myself included! Every New Year’s Eve, I make sure to toss a little salt over my shoulder after the ball drops.
