Do you have a friend or family member who is struggling with depression? The feelings of helplessness and hopelessness that come along with not being able to help can be overwhelming. Well, have no fear!

There are several simple, but effective ways that you can show your loved one support without taking away their autonomy. From offering practical assistance to just letting them know that they are heard and respected, there are many helpful things you can do for someone in this difficult situation. Read on to find out some ways to support a loved one struggling with depression!

Encourage them to seek professional help

It takes courage to admit that you need help, especially when it comes to mental health. Seeking professional help can be a challenging and daunting process, but it can also be the key to improving your overall well-being and mental health. Therapy, medication, and even a facility that treats depression are all widely available options, and seeking them can help you navigate and process your emotions healthily and productively.

It’s important to remember that asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but rather a sign of strength. Don’t be afraid to talk to your doctor about what options might be best for you and take that first step towards healing and self-improvement.

Check-in on their mental health often

Our mental health is just as important as our physical health, yet it often goes overlooked or ignored. Checking in on the mental health of our loved ones is crucial to their wellbeing. It’s important to have honest conversations with them and create a safe space where they feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and emotions with us.

Listening without judgment is key; it allows them to speak freely without fear of criticism or shame. By showing genuine empathy and support, we can help our loved ones through difficult times and strengthen our relationships with them. Remember, we all need someone to listen to us without judgment from time to time.

Offer your time and presence

As humans, we all crave connection and companionship. Sometimes, all it takes is simply offering our time and presence to someone who may be feeling lonely or down. Inviting them to join us for a walk or grabbing a cup of coffee together can make a huge difference in their day and overall well-being. It’s important to remember that small gestures like these can have a big impact on someone’s mood and quality of life. So, next time you know someone who could use a little company, don’t hesitate to extend an invitation and make their day a little brighter.

Don’t pressure them to open up about their feelings

It’s natural to want to help those we care about, especially if we suspect they may be struggling with something emotionally. However, we have to remember that not everyone is comfortable sharing their innermost thoughts and feelings with others. It can be frustrating to feel like we’re in the dark, but it’s important to remember to respect the boundaries of our loved ones.

By pushing too hard, we risk making things worse or causing them to withdraw even further. It’s okay to let them know that we’re here for them if they need us, but ultimately, the decision to open up belongs to them. The best thing we can do is be patient and give them the space they need to navigate their emotions on their own terms.

Help with tasks or chores around the house

Keeping up with chores and housework can be a daunting task, especially for those who already have a full plate. Whether it’s scrubbing the floors, doing the laundry, or organizing cluttered living spaces, sometimes we all need a little extra help to stay on top of things. That’s where lending a hand to someone struggling with tasks around the house can make a world of difference.

Whether it’s a friend, family member, or neighbor, offering assistance with even just one chore can go a long way in lifting a weight off of their shoulders. Plus, helping someone else can be a rewarding experience for both parties involved. So, consider offering a helping hand to someone in need and see the positive impact it can have on their day-to-day life.

Brainstorm positive coping mechanisms

Life can undoubtedly throw some challenges our way, but it’s essential to have healthy ways to cope and overcome them. One of the best ways to do this is by incorporating positive coping mechanisms into your daily routine. Some of these include journaling, which can help you put your thoughts and emotions down on paper and make sense of them.

Alternatively, exercising is a fantastic way to release endorphins and reduce stress levels. Lastly, art projects not only provide a creative outlet but can also be therapeutic for those struggling with anxiety or depression. Adding these positive coping mechanisms to your day-to-day activities can help you feel more grounded and able to handle whatever life throws your way.

Remind them of their worth

We all have moments when we feel like we aren’t good enough or that our efforts aren’t appreciated. During those times, it can be incredibly powerful when someone reminds us of our worth. A simple word of encouragement can be enough to lift us and give us the strength to keep going.

We all need to be reminded that we are valued and appreciated, even in our darkest moments. So, let’s strive to offer words of encouragement and understanding whenever possible. The impact we can have on someone’s day or even their life is immeasurable. Let’s spread love and positivity wherever we go, and make a difference in the lives of those around us.

Taking care of a loved one with mental health issues can be an emotional and exhausting process. It’s important to remember that while we may not have all the answers, we can still provide emotional support in various ways and remind them of their worth.

Reaching out to them daily, checking in on their mental health, offering your time and presence, helping with tasks or chores around the home, brainstorming positive coping mechanisms, encouraging professional help if needed, and offering words of encouragement are all great steps to take in supporting a loved one with mental health issues. So take a moment and reach out to those you know who need a little extra love and support, because every small effort goes toward making the world a more nurturing place.

I started this blog in 2013, right as I was diving into astrology and taking my first solo trips. True to my Gemini stellium and “do ten things at once” nature, I wrote about everything. Over time, it grew into a library of 4,000+ articles—expanded with the help of close friends who are now our editorial team. I’m obsessed with cats, good coffee and wine, and graphic design (currently loving brutalism). And when I say I love travel, I mean it: in under 13 years, I’ve visited 40+ countries on my own, some more than ten times. I’m also into feng shui, astrology, the paranormal, law, metal detecting, and about a thousand other rabbit holes. If you’re into travel, come say hi on Instagram: @swenisa.
