Everyone knows the feeling of an upset stomach, that heavy, churning, or unsettled sensation that doesn’t seem to pass. Sometimes it’s food, stress, or nerves. But other times, it points to something deeper: something stuck, something you can’t quite “digest” on an emotional or spiritual level.
The gut has long been called the body’s “second brain.” For centuries, it’s been tied to intuition, emotion, and energy. When it stirs, it may be less about what you ate and more about your body mirroring what your mind or spirit is struggling to handle.
Something You Can’t Digest
Spiritually, an upset stomach is often a sign that you’re carrying something you can’t “digest.” Not food, but a situation, memory, or emotion that won’t settle.
It can show up when you’re forcing yourself to accept something you know deep down isn’t right, or when you’re trying to push away a truth that refuses to disappear. The discomfort sits in your stomach the same way those unprocessed feelings sit in your life.
Example: you tell yourself you’re over someone, but a part of you isn’t. Or you try to brush off conflict at work, but inside, it’s still eating at you. That unsettled stomach becomes the physical echo of what your spirit is refusing to absorb.
A Call to Release
Just as your stomach holds food until it’s processed, spiritually it can also “hold” unresolved emotions. That heaviness or knot is a signal that it’s time to let go.
It might be anger you’ve carried too long, guilt that lingers, or a grudge that won’t dissolve. Holding it inside doesn’t protect you…it weighs you down. The stomach ache is a reminder that what you refuse to release will keep building tension until you do.
When the Gut Warns You
The gut is often the first place to react when something isn’t right. That churn, twist, or sudden uneasiness before making a decision can be your intuition pulling you back. And if your stomach tightens every time you’re around a certain person, that’s not random either. It can be your body warning you that their energy is unsettled, or that their intentions don’t match their words.
If your stomach knots up before signing a deal, starting a trip, or saying yes to something new, don’t ignore it. Sometimes the gut is quieter than the mind, but it notices things reason overlooks. Spiritually, that “gut punch” is a protective sign asking you to slow down, look again, and choose carefully.
Stomach Pain
Persistent stomach pain is often tied to fear and resistance. Spiritually, it can represent being stuck in worry, replaying scenarios you can’t control, or carrying dread about the future. The body contracts around that fear, and the stomach is where it lands.
Pain here can signal that it’s time to face what you’ve been avoiding. It’s the body’s way of saying you can’t keep suppressing it… it’s already hurting you.
Constipation
Not being able to empty yourself often mirrors emotional holding as well. Spiritually, constipation is tied to refusing to let go of the past, clinging to control, or holding onto feelings you don’t want to face.
It shows up when you’re grasping too tightly, whether to memories, grudges, or patterns that don’t serve you. The body mirrors that stuckness, blocking flow until you release what’s been trapped inside.

Diarrhea
On the other end, diarrhea can be seen as energy moving too fast. Spiritually, it represents overwhelm, fear of losing control, or situations you’re rushing through without processing.
It’s the body in purge mode, flushing out what you can’t hold, but without giving you time to integrate it. Spiritually, diarrhea may be a sign you’re trying to push ahead too quickly, or that something in your life is literally “too much to stomach.”
Spiritual Awakening and Gut Shifts
During periods of growth, the stomach often acts up. Just like physical growing pains, spiritual transformation can stir physical discomfort. An uneasy stomach, sudden pain, or even changes like constipation or diarrhea can show up when your system is adjusting to higher awareness.
Old emotions, fears, and beliefs stored in the body start surfacing, and the stomach processes that release. It’s usually uncomfortable, yes, but it’s part of clearing out space for new patterns.
Listen to Your Gut
The gut is one of the body’s most responsive messengers. An uneasy stomach, pain, constipation, or diarrhea may not only be physical; they can also mirror what’s happening emotionally and spiritually.
If these issues happen often, of course, the first step is always to see a doctor. But beyond the medical side, it’s worth asking what else might be sitting in your gut. Is there something you can’t swallow or digest: an emotion, a truth, or a situation you’ve been holding onto? Or the opposite: are you rushing through life so quickly that nothing has time to settle?
The stomach often speaks before the mind does. It holds what we avoid, and it reveals what we’d rather push past. It doesn’t lie.
