feng shui buying house where someone died

When it comes to buying a house, people consider things like location, price, and condition. But some people may run into an unusual situation – looking at a place where someone died.

Feng shui is all about the flow of energy, or “qi,” in a space. This helps create balance and harmony. If you’re interested in feng shui and looking at a house where the previous owner passed away, here’s what you need to know.

Feng Shui Is Based On “Living” Energy

Feng Shui is based on the idea that our environment affects our well-being, health, and prosperity. According to its principles, the flow of energy called Qi should move smoothly and be balanced to promote positive feelings. Spaces should be arranged and designed to let Qi flow easily.

Feng shui also thinks living things are important sources of energy. Your home should feel alive. Use real flowers, not plastic ones. Choose wood furniture, not plastic. Enjoy candles’ warm glow instead of just lights.

Many believers say keeping human or animal ashes is not good for a home. A healthy home has living things in it, like plants, wood, water, or colors that make you think of life and energy.

The Influence of Death Energy

In traditional Feng Shui, death is seen as a big deal that changes the energy of a place. When someone dies, their life force or energy is believed to stick around the space for a while, a week or even a few years.

During this time, their leftover energy is thought of as negative. It could “mess,” so speak, with the natural flow of energy, or Qi, in the home. If that death energy gets stuck and doesn’t move on, it may cause bad luck or problems for anyone new living in the house.

So, Should I Buy A House Where Someone Died?

People often ask me why the spirits of those who have passed away might stick around the house where they died. It’s not always an easy thing to explain. When someone dies in a home, their spirit is very likely to stay connected to that place.

I know it might sound a bit strange, but there are lots of reported cases that support this. Some people say it depends on how the person died, whether it was something violent or peaceful. It also matters how long ago they died and if any of their personal things are still in the home.

From a Feng Shui perspective, you shouldn’t rule out buying a house just because someone passed away there before. Death is a natural part of life, so it shouldn’t scare you away. Still, there are a couple of things you may want to know about first if you do decide to live in a place where someone died.

Intensity of The Event

In Feng Shui beliefs, how someone dies can really affect the energy they leave behind. If it was violent or traumatic, it might leave a stronger impression of their energy. But if they passed away peacefully, the effect would be less noticeable.

If you don’t know anything about the person who used to live in your house, it’s a good idea to find out some details about how they died. Learning the circumstances could help explain any weird feelings you get in the home.

Time Since The Event

Generally, the longer ago someone passed away in a home, the less intense any spiritual presence may feel. Their energy is thought to dissipate over time. The natural energy flow of the space helps cleanse it of any negativity. For example, if someone died in the house a hundred years ago, you probably wouldn’t feel anything. But if it was only a few months or a year ago, their spirit may still feel present.

Cleansing And Blessing Rituals

Doing rituals or ceremonies to cleanse and bless the home can help get rid of any bad energy left over from what happened there before.

Even though cleansing rituals may not be a traditional feng shui thing, that old Chinese belief really values keeping things clean. To make sure your place is physically clean and spiritually clean too, you can either get help from someone experienced in getting rid of bad vibes or put feng shui items around your space for protection.

Also remember that ghosts may stick to things they really liked when they were alive, like jewelry, statues, or even a favorite piece of furniture. So, if someone died in your house before you moved in, my advice would be to take out anything that was in the place before.

Personal Sensitivity

Some people are more sensitive to spiritual things and energy in a place. This can affect how they see if a house still has anything from someone who passed away there. If you’d rather not think about how the person died or hire someone to cleanse the house, you can move in and see if anything weird happens. Just pay attention to what goes on.

My Advice

If spirituality is your thing, I’d recommend cleansing a new home before moving in. You can use sage, say prayers, or hire a professional to do it. However, in feng shui, death is viewed as a natural part of life. So, as long as you get rid of anything that belonged to the person who passed away, the “death energy” will be gone. After that, you can happily live in a house where someone died.

Over time, it grew into a library of 4,000+ articles—expanded with the help of close friends who are now our editorial team. I’m obsessed with cats, good coffee and wine, and graphic design (currently loving brutalism).
