When I think of Orpheus, I imagine a figure whose music was so heartbreakingly beautiful that it softened even the stern heart of Hades. Orpheus was the son of Calliope, the muse of epic poetry, and he learned his craft from Apollo himself, who gifted him a golden lyre. With it, he didn’t just play songs… he summoned the soul of the world. Trees leaned closer to hear him, wild beasts sat quietly at his feet, and even stones were said to stir with feeling.
His most famous story is one of love and loss: the descent into the Underworld to retrieve his beloved Eurydice. Orpheus charmed the rulers of the dead with his music, and for a moment it seemed as if love truly conquered all. But, as we know, his journey ended in tragedy. He looked back too soon, doubting what had been promised, and Eurydice slipped away forever.
This myth is not just a romantic tragedy. It also shows a recurring theme with Orpheus: the power of art and devotion, and the fragility of faith. His music was the bridge between worlds, but his human doubts unraveled the gift.
Later, Orpheus used his songs to save Jason and the Argonauts from the Sirens, drowning out their deadly melodies with his own. Even after his brutal death at the hands of Dionysian Maenads, his severed head and lyre carried on singing as they floated to Lesbos. His voice literally transcended death.
