Let me share something interesting I came across while reading Martin Schulman’s work on karmic astrology. Out of all the authors I’ve read on this topic, he explains things in a way that actually feels meaningful and practical.
In one of his books, he talks about two lesser-known points in a chart: the Part of Regeneration and the Part of Dependency. These show how the soul heals and where it tends to cling to people, habits, or situations.
In this article, you’ll learn how to calculate both points, with an example so it’s easy to follow.
Part of Regeneration
The Part of Regeneration shows how your soul recovers, rebuilds, and returns to itself after difficult experiences. It’s where you shed old versions of yourself, release stagnant patterns, and step into something more honest and real. This point in the chart describes your ability to heal, transform, and come back stronger, not in a dramatic or romantic way, but through raw, personal growth.
Part of Dependency
The Part of Dependency points to the places in your life where you might hold on too tightly, to people, habits, comfort, or even old pain. It’s where attachment feels safer than change, even when it keeps you small. This isn’t just about emotional clinginess; it can show up in the way you depend on approval, stability, finances, or relationships to feel secure.
This part of the chart shows where your soul is still learning how to stand on its own feet. It’s the territory of letting go without falling apart, choosing yourself even when it feels scary, and breaking patterns that make you give your power away. The work here isn’t to become cold or detached, but to be connected without losing your autonomy.
- Part of Regeneration – Healing, transformation, inner rebirth.
- Part of Dependency – Breaking attachments, learning independence.
These two points are always opposite each other on the zodiac wheel. For example, if your Part of Regeneration is at 4° Sagittarius, your Part of Dependency will be at 4° Gemini.
How to Calculate the Part of Regeneration
Formula: Ascendant + 8th House Cusp – Moon
Let’s use an example:
- Ascendant: 13° Aries
- 8th House Cusp: 24° Scorpio
- Moon: 29° Taurus
Convert each to zodiac degrees:
- Ascendant (13° Aries): Aries is the first sign → 13°
- 8th House Cusp (24° Scorpio): Scorpio is the 8th sign → 7 × 30 = 210; 210 + 24 = 234°
- Moon (29° Taurus): Taurus is the 2nd sign → 1 × 30 = 30; 30 + 29 = 59°
Step 1: Add Ascendant + 8th House Cusp
13 + 234 = 247°
Step 2: Subtract the Moon’s degree
247 – 59 = 188°
Where Is 188° in the Zodiac?
Starting from 0° Aries:
| Sign | Degree Range |
|---|---|
| Aries | 0°–29° |
| Taurus | 30°–59° |
| Gemini | 60°–89° |
| Cancer | 90°–119° |
| Leo | 120°–149° |
| Virgo | 150°–179° |
| Libra | 180°–209° |
| Scorpio | 210°–239° |
188° falls in Libra.
To find the exact degree in Libra: 188° – 180° = 21° Libra
So:
- Part of Regeneration = 21° Libra
- Part of Dependency = 21° Aries (directly opposite)
The Part of Regeneration shows what helps you find strength again, while the Part of Dependency shows what keeps dragging you back. When you’re aware of both, you stop moving in circles. You understand your patterns, you see where you give too much of yourself away, and you realize what actually helps you heal. And that kind of self-awareness… that’s already a form of freedom.
