When your pet dies, the house feels different. The spot where their bed used to be is just empty. It makes perfect sense that you’d want to keep their ashes close. That little urn feels like a piece of them, and letting it go can seem like losing them all over again. But according to feng shui, keeping an urn with pet ashes in your home can hold you in a state of grief, bringing stagnant energy that affects your entire living space.

Your Home Needs to Breathe

Think about what your home felt like when your pet was alive… probably full of movement, maybe a little chaos, but definitely full of life. Feng shui calls this vibrant, moving energy “Chi.” It’s what makes a house feel good.

Now, think about what ashes represent. It’s not your pet’s joyful spirit; it’s what’s left after their life has ended. In feng shui, we see this as energy that has stopped moving. It’s become still and heavy.

Keeping that heavy, still energy in the main part of your home is like trying to run with a weight tied to your ankle. It can make everything feel slower, sadder, and more stuck. You might find it harder to move forward, or feel a cloud of sadness that just won’t lift.

Love Them Without the Urn

This isn’t about getting rid of your memories. It’s about choosing how to honor them. Your pet’s life was all about playing, running, and loving you. Their ashes are the exact opposite of that.

By focusing only on the ashes, you’re anchoring yourself to the moment they died, not the years they lived. The best way to keep them close is to celebrate the life they had, not house what remains.

What to Do Instead That Still Feels Loving

You can find a beautiful solution that feels right for you and respects the energy of your home.

Let Them Rest in Nature

Your pet probably loved being outside. Burying their ashes in your garden under a new rose bush or a young tree is a powerful act. Every time that tree blooms, you’ll be reminded of their life, not their death. The energy isn’t trapped in an urn; it’s helping something new and beautiful to grow.

Find a Special Spot They Loved

Did your dog have a favorite walk in the woods? Did your cat love sleeping in a sunny spot on the patio? Scatter some of their ashes there or mark the spot with a stone. This way, when you visit, you’re connecting with the places where they were happiest.

Bring Their Spirit Back Inside

Get their photo framed and put it where you can see it every day. Keep their collar on a hook by the door or their favorite toy on a shelf. These things are filled with the memory of their vibrant, loving energy. This is the energy you want in your home, the energy of their life.

Listen to What Your Heart Tells You

At the end of the day, you know what’s best for you. Pay attention to how you feel when you look at the urn. Does it bring a smile, or does it bring a fresh wave of sadness?

If it brings you genuine comfort, that’s what matters most. But if you’ve felt heavy and unable to move forward since you brought it inside, that’s your heart telling you it might be time for a change.

Your pet loved you and would want you to be happy. Letting their ashes rest outside isn’t letting them go. It’s simply giving their memory a different home, one that allows you to heal while keeping their spirit alive right where you live.

I started this blog in 2013, right as I was diving into astrology and taking my first solo trips. True to my Gemini stellium and “do ten things at once” nature, I wrote about everything. Over time, it grew into a library of 4,000+ articles—expanded with the help of close friends who are now our editorial team. I’m obsessed with cats, good coffee and wine, and graphic design (currently loving brutalism). And when I say I love travel, I mean it: in under 13 years, I’ve visited 40+ countries on my own, some more than ten times. I’m also into feng shui, astrology, the paranormal, law, metal detecting, and about a thousand other rabbit holes. If you’re into travel, come say hi on Instagram: @swenisa.
