unlucky house numbers

Have you ever met someone who refused to buy a house just because of the number on the door? It might sound like pure superstition, but in both numerology and feng shui, numbers carry powerful vibrations that shape the energy of a home. They can influence not just the atmosphere of the space, but also the prosperity, relationships, and overall wellbeing of the people who live there.

Some house numbers are said to bring luck, comfort, and prosperity; others have a reputation for stirring up challenges like money stress, tension in relationships, or just a feeling that things never quite flow smoothly.

If you’re getting ready to move, or you’re just curious about what your address might be saying about your space, here’s a closer look at the numbers often considered “unlucky” and what you can do to balance their energy.

What Your House Number Means in Numerology

In numerology, every number carries a certain vibration that colors the energy of your space. Your house number isn’t just a label on the door; it’s often seen as a mirror of the experiences and lessons you’ll work through while living there.

Take the number 1, for example. It’s linked with independence, ambition, and fresh starts, the kind of energy that supports new projects and leadership. Living in a house that reduces to 1 can feel like having a built-in push toward opportunities and growth.

Of course, not all numbers have such an easy reputation. Numbers like 4, 13, 22, and 31 are often thought of as “unlucky” in feng shui. They’re tied to feelings of restriction, setbacks, or things coming to an end.

From a feng shui lens, numbers that reduce to 4 are said to block the flow of qi (life-force energy), leaving people feeling stuck, weighed down, or unable to move forward smoothly.

Still, an “unlucky” number doesn’t mean you’re doomed. With a few simple feng shui adjustments, like bringing in more light, adding plants, or shifting the flow of a room, you can balance out the energy and create a home that feels supportive and alive.

Avoiding 4, 13, 22 And 31: The Most Unfortunate Numbers

In feng shui, the numbers 4, 13, 22, and 31 have some of the worst reputations.

  • Number 4: In Chinese culture, the pronunciation of “four” is nearly identical to the word for “death,” which makes it highly inauspicious. In Western numerology, it is tied to restriction and confinement.
  • Number 13: Famous for being unlucky, often due to the Last Supper’s 13 guests, and because 1+3 equals 4, it doubles down on the “death” association.
  • Number 22 and 31: Both reduce to 4 (2+2=4, 3+1=4), so they are considered unlucky by association.

Steer Clear of Addresses With 4 or 13

If you’re house hunting, it’s wise to be cautious with addresses featuring 4, 13, 22, or 31. Numbers like 400, 301, 1102, 2002, 2101 or 1201 all carry the same vibrations.

In some cases, you can officially change the house number before purchase or slightly adjust it to a luckier one. For example, turning 13 into 12A or 14, or modifying a 31 into 32, can shift the energy. Though it might sound like a small detail, culturally, people often pay higher prices for houses with “lucky” numbers while avoiding the unlucky ones.

What If You Can’t Change The Address

Already living in a house that reduces to 4? Don’t worry, it doesn’t mean you’re doomed or need to pack up and move. It’s like baking… if you accidentally put in sugar instead of salt, you don’t throw everything out; you just make something different (and maybe even better). It’s the same with your home’s energy… it’s all about finding the right balance and adding what’s missing to make it feel good again.

Feng Shui Remedies For “Unlucky” Numbers:

  • Bring Life Indoors: Plants, fresh flowers, and water features (like fountains or aquariums) add vitality and counterbalance stagnant energy.
  • Brighten Your Space: Use cheerful colors, especially reds, yellows, or oranges, to uplift the atmosphere.
  • Avoid Mirrors Facing Entrances or Beds: This prevents chi from bouncing out of the home or disturbing sleep.
  • Display Positive Symbols: Hang family photos, artwork, or spiritual symbols that remind you of love and resilience.

With a little intention, you can shift the energy of your space. Add more light, bring in plants, use colors that lift your mood… small touches like these can make a house with a so-called “unlucky” number feel warm, supportive, and totally yours.

Inauspicious House Orientations According To Feng Shui

In feng shui, it’s not just the number that matters… the direction your home faces can also impact its energy. Some orientations are believed to create challenges, but luckily, there are remedies for each.

  • Southwest: Connected to the matriarch’s energy. Homes facing southwest may bring stress to the female head of household. Remedy by grounding the southwest corner with heavy furniture and adding warm lighting.
  • Southeast: Linked to wood energy, this orientation can trigger instability or arguments. Remedy with the fire element: red décor, candles, or circular items that represent harmony.
  • North: Connected to water and career. A north-facing home might bring obstacles in work or education. Remedy with earth elements like stone, tiles, or bricks, plus warm lighting or a fireplace to stabilize energy.

Home Is What You Make It

According to feng shui and numerology, the numbers 4, 13, 22, and 31 are widely considered unlucky. It’s no coincidence that homes with these addresses often linger longer on the market or sell for lower prices.

But a house number doesn’t decide your fate. With a few simple changes, like adding plants, more light, or meaningful décor, you can shift the atmosphere in your favor. In the end, what makes a home truly lucky isn’t the number on the door… it’s the joy, love, and laughter that fill it.
